Ballet Slippers

Make your own gum paste ballet slippers for your cake!

Ballet slippers are the perfect adornment for a ballet-themed party. They can be made days or weeks before you make your cake and placed on top to add a special touch! Watch me make a gum paste ballet shoe in this quick video!

This is a step by step picture guide to make the glittery white pair of ballet shoes. In this tutorial, I didn’t include the ball of gum paste in the toe so they are a little flatter. If you like the more rounded look, make sure to place a ball of gum paste in the toe before you add the top of the slipper.

Before you start, print out the template below in the size you would like to use. Then you’re ready to make your gum paste ballet shoes for your cake or cupcakes.

Ballet Slipper Pattern

1. Use the template shown above to make the ballet slippers. You can print it any size.
2. Using a silpat mat or parchment paper, roll out your gum paste and cut your ballet slipper top and sole. Take your pieces and work them together to form the ballet slipper.
3. When your shoe is fully formed, brush it lightly with water and sprinkle fine sugar on the top. It will not stick on the dry surfaces. Wait until fully dry and then shake off the excess sugar.
4. Roll out your gum paste and cut into thin strips. Form a bow out of a strip.
5. Make a bow with your thin strip of gum paste.
6. Place your bow on the slipper, using a little bit of edible sugar glue if needed.
7. Then take a second strip and make a little ribbon rose. Place both the bow and the ribbon rose on the ballet slipper.
