Who doesn’t love an owl cupcake? It is such a great theme for a baby shower! Recently I had the opportunity to bake owl cupcakes for a baby shower. I talked with the person ordering on the phone and I formed an image of owls in my head. I spent some time making a Pinterest board and shared the ideas I found with her.
She thought the ideas were cool but her daughter in law already had a plan. She sent me the picture of the cupcakes that she was looking to have.
She loves these owl cupcakes!
How to make the owls
I think they are adorable, but I wanted to figure out for sure how to make them. What are the eyes made from? Is the top just frosting or is something supporting it? I searched online and found instructions for these owl cupcakes on Duncan Hines website.
Time to buy a lot of Oreos
Oreos, Junior Mints and Spree Candy. The picture above is actually a mix of full size cupcakes and mini cupcakes. As someone who is often way too overzealous (and NOT a close reader) I didn’t even realize they were different to begin with! As I perused the details I thought, “why do we need mini Oreos?” and “how are we using both Junior Mints AND m&ms?” The minis are made with m&ms and mini Oreos while the large ones are made with full size Oreos and Junior Mints. The nose on the minis is an m&m and the nose on the full sized one is a Spree candy.
Owl cupcake supply list
- Golden Oreos
- Junior Mints
- Cupcake liners
On the Duncan Hines website they direct you to use their cake mix and frosting. I prefer to bake my own cake and make my own frosting. I used these recipes.
It’s hard not to eat the broken bits
The cookies are fun and not terrible complicated but there are a lot of eating opportunities. I ate way too many broken Oreo bits while I made these 50 baby shower owl cupcakes!
