Puppy Cupcake Toppers

When the customer wants their puppy on cupcakes, it’s time to break out the non-toxic decorating chalks and get creative!

To Start

I cut out the picture of the dog and drew his features on parchment paper to get a feel for what he would look like when sketched. I cut out the outline of the drawing I’d made and used that as a cutting template

The Next Step

I cut out purple circles for the base. Then, I used the parchment template to cut out 19 dog heads! After cutting the heads, I laid them on top of the purple circles so they’d begin to adhere. I added the features one later at a time. I began with the left ear and followed with the right ear before adding features with the non-toxic decorating chalks.

Decorate the faces

I realized that I would need to take the dog faces off the purple background to allow me to add the features. I worked on them carefully in sets of 3-8. I made the features rather smudged and rough, as they’d be getting a fondant nose and eyes on top of this background. After the details were all added, I put a small piece of fondant on the top of the purple backing. This would serve two purposes: to help it to adhere well, and give the dog faces a third dimension.

The Final Steps

I finished these puppy toppers by adding the noses (a small piece of chocolate fondant with two little indents for nostrils), more mouth detail and little black fondant eyes with some white to add realism. Thinking that green would be a great background icing color, I frosted the cupcakes with green icing and placed the toppers on the cupcakes.
