Yearbook Cake

High School graduation means big parties ... and cake! This celebration cake was for two friends hosting a joint graduation party. The girls were both very involved in school, and wanted to showcase their party with pictures. A large yearbook cake was the perfect way to do this.

The girls sent me pictures for me to order edible images. I love working with Sweet Express Images, so I placed my order with them, knowing they'd arrive exactly how I liked them.

This cake was a double layer 1/2 sheet, with both chocolate and vanilla cake. The chocolate cake formed the base layer and the vanilla cake formed the top layer, sculpted to look like an open book.

I baked a half sheet chocolate cake and a 1/4 sheet vanilla cake. After the cakes were baked and cooled, I placed them on the board, adding a sliver of vanilla cake along the center of the book to form the spine of the book. I went around the edge with the fondant border for the book. Then, it was time to crumb frost and add a filling layer between the chocolate and vanilla cake. I used a 10" round tip to frost the sides of the cake, and would later use a decorating comb to make the sides look like pages from a book. I laid the edible images on top of the cake, and then made a frosting border around it in the girls' school colors.
