Baby Yoda Cake

Last week I received an order request saying, “I’m hoping to get a birthday cake for my son that looks like baby yoda’s head. It can be small - there are just 4 of us. Can you make a Baby Yoda cake?

Hmmm. Yes I can make a Baby Yoda cake. The trouble is that I don’t often get the chance to practice making sculpted cakes. Most of my orders are requests for more traditional cakes. I haven’t made a cake like this recently but was SO excited to have the opportunity. I popped onto Pinterest right away and put together a Baby Yoda Cake board to send her.

A tutorial

I found a great video tutorial to make a Baby Yoda cake and placed it in the board of ideas. She liked all the ideas and said to run with whatever I wanted to do. I so rarely get that opportunity and was really excited. The tutorial looked totally feasible and it was nice and detailed. I decided to give it a go.

Before I started to make my Baby Yoda cake, I let my kids know that I was going to be making a challenging cake. They often come in to visit with me while I’m baking so I said what I always say when I am actively baking or decorating something challenging, “please give me space so I don’t mess up.” They both obliged. My daughter headed off to work shortly after I started and my son got right to work practicing his saxophone!

Slideshow

After baking the cakes, I watched the tutorial, stopping it in key places as I needed to. The images below show all my steps while making the Baby Yoda cake.

I used FONDX fondant and colored it myself to make the Baby Yoda cakae. I love working with FONDX because it rolls out so nicely and it tastes really great. It is perfect for covering cakes and just a little more challenging for figure modeling.

To add the gold accents, I used luster dust mixed with a little bit of vanilla. This makes a great paint for you to brush on.

As soon as I finished making the Baby Yoda cake, I just had to email my customer and say that she was going to LOVE the Baby Yoda Cake. I was thrilled with the tutorial for providing such perfect step by step instructions and with myself for following them.

I hope that you can try making your own Baby Yoda cake! Now I just need to watch The Mandalorian to get properly introduced.
